He's Back

... and with a really nicely illustrated strip (We're Back).

I love the image of Brent as Clint Eastwood; the drawing is executed very well. He's even found some machismo.

I'd be happy if we saw more thematic strips like this (if that's even a term) -- lean more on the art, less on the gag.

Also like the self-portrait. I have the showdown theme song stuck in my head now :)

the zig-zag stripe on brent's poncho made me think of charlie brown. double homage, perhaps?

god, yes. more well drawn strips like this. look at that hand! thats a well drawn dramatic hand. the relationship between blacks and whites is perfect too. it gets me all fanboy again.

Beautifully illustrated. Well done Kurtz.

Nice come-back strip...and is it just me, or was that the Charlie Brown poncho? Heh.

Anyway, he's starting off well, hopefully it will continue.

This was a perfectly fine strip. The only complaint I have is the layout of the wanted poster. It works fine and I understood the intent, but I can't help feeling that there was a better way to lay it out. But that's not important.

I disagree with the sentiment that we need more of these "thematic" strips (I don't know what to call them either... so we'll stick with thematic) They're nice every once in a while, when there's a concept that can be expressed through a series of three or four panels with no dialogue. But in general, I''m a writing guy. The art is nice, and helps the writing along, but for the most part I don't really pay that much attention to the art when I'm reading a strip. So my personal preference is for the art to just sort of help the text along, with the emphasis on the text.

But that's just one person's personal preference.

I cannot believe how much people analyze and worry about PVP on this website. I spend 5 seconds on PVP a day, and have for many years now, and have never been upset about its quality. Honestly, I don't think I've been upset about anything in my life as much as you guys have been about something someone puts up for free on the internet.

It is a comic strip guys. We get a piece of a story every day which has real, honest-to-God, character development. Its a little reprieve from your world. Nothing is perfect. Just enjoy the story. Who care if a certain panel could have been drawn a little better?

"We're back" was awesome. No two ways about it.

And the best thing about "On a steel horse they ride" may have been the server's excessive amount of "flair" on his suspenders/apron. Sure, he meets the minimum level of flair, but we really just want him to WANT to wear more flair than the minimum. Rock on, Office Space. I'm not exactly sure what the picture on the placard in the middle of the table is of, inconsequential though it may be. I'm going to guess "a drink", since those are usually drink/dessert menu flipcards?

'On a Steel Horse They Ride' is a reference to a song, and I imagine to the boat from Deadliest Catch...but I like the Office Space interpretation too.

Two good comics in a row! Things are beginning nicely.

Also, 'Anonymous' the irony of coming to this site and writing a message to criticize us for writing here, surely cannot be lost on you.

Mr. Richyhead can afford to just toss out leftover crab instead of eating the remains later? I'd shout at him too. Wasteful fancypants jerk.

Whew! For a second there I thought we weren't going to have the token Anonymous saying that everyone here needs to settle down about free content on the Internet. Thanks anon!

Wanted Dead or Alive is the theme for "Deadliest Catch" I know because it plays in my clinic every day at 10am.

Now we know what Brent looks like without sunglasses: badass.

Why are we talking about what the theme song for Deadliest Catch is?

Brett Schiller (Sage) said...

RW said the title "on a steel horse they ride" was a reference to a song and the boat. I was just informing him that its a reference to a line of the theme song of the show.
Thus I was clarifying what he said.
