One for the road

Much like Michael Bay, Scott Kurtz seems to have some trouble with the concept of a 'wide shot' here. It feels like the camera is in the character's face and it bugs me.

Holiday plans? Was Shecky planning on hanging around the bar until thanksgiving? Granted, he probably means vacation when he says holiday, much like the Brits are given to saying. (to the best of my knowledge anyway. If any Brits are reading this and this saying is out of date, my apologies.)

That ray gun thing is either very short or it's *deep* in Shecky's nostril. 's'all I'm saying.

Not much to say about the art here..the lack of any kind of background is starting to grate on me though. And since the ray gun up his nose thing clearly surprised Shecky enough to both knock his hat off and make him drop his drink, I think it deserve some kind of sound effect. "Poink", maybe.

I'm still not a fan of the awkward fish-eye lens view of Scratch.

Putting the raygun up Shecky's nose was an interesting chance to showcase some nostrils, but... instead the nose is just sort of bigger. It works, though, so this is a nitpicky "I wouldn't'a done it!" blowhard sort of thing.

I also don't like the missing neckline in panel 4, the second ear in panel 3, the super-bulbous arm in panel 3, and the sudden transition between panels 4 and 5 (And I don't want to see another three panels of Shecky putting his hat back on, sitting back up and putting a glass to his lips while sacrificing the inclusion of an action-oriented panel tomorrow).

SK has been going a great job with drinks and ice for a while now, though. That stuff keeps looking great. Oh, maybe it should look spilled in panel 5, though.

This comic is just hard to look at. The view point just doesn't work and makes it awkward to try to figure out what is going on.

Is Scratch wired on crack or something, his eyes look like he drank every pot of coffee on his way to the bar.

I cant work out the bulbous thing in panel 3

I believe it's meant to be Shecky's forearm as he struggles back up to the barstool.

The super-bulbous arm in panel 3?

It's an arm. Shecky is leaning his (Now super-bulbous) elbow on the counter as he crawls back up to it / stands up / sits down / whatever.

Nuts, I knew I shouldn't have bothered repeating myself.

I can't stop hearing Stewie's voice every time I read Scratch's dialogue.

Yes, Stewie having a conversation with W.C Fields. Kurtz sure is an ocean of ideas.

The arm thing bugged me a lot, but not as much as the ray gun. It took me a minute to figure out what it even was! I kept thinking that Scratch grabbed Sheckey's cheek and was squeezing it really hard. I agree with jai that a sound effect might have cleared that up. So would some coloring too...

Meanwhile, where's the punchline? "Le me iron it out for you?" with a gun to his head? It works within the story (i.e. in character with Scratch) but just isn't funny.

I did like the familiar line though. Ah, I love any D&D reference.

Jai is not I.

So...how's that Jase thing goin' now? Or, how about the Andy guy with the severe geek impediment?

Yeah, but don't go and call his mediocre art mediocre like I did. Or else you'll have angry people who will slag you for it.

Jesus! PvP just keep sucking harder and harder. It's kind of like watching a train wreck in slow motion now.

Sorry Esoteric Scribe. I meant that.

For the record: "Vacation" is pretty much just a north american word. As far as I've heard, in the British Isles, New Zealand and Australia, "Holiday" is used instead.

It took me ages to work out panel 3 as well: it almost looks like someone is poking the camera.

Haha, holy shit! You're totally right, Unusual Astronomer. Now I can't HELP but see it that way. Arrgh!

I'm starting to think that the raygun genuinely has no barrel on it, that it's merely an orb mounted to a grip. Everything would make sense, then! :P

"I'm starting to think that the raygun genuinely has no barrel on it, that it's merely an orb mounted to a grip. Everything would make sense, then! :P"Except it staying in place in a holster, of course :)

Scratch's argument today is retarded. Shecky had only just said that the arrival of humans caused the mythical beings to disappear, and then Scratch felt the need to prove that science rules the universe instead of magic. Why? Shecky's story had pretty much confirmed that science overrules magic, and he never said otherwise.

Jai said...

Well, I'll be.

Now I have no idea how that holster was supposed to work. Scratch's raygun looks, um, pretty much the LEAST like a raygun out of every raygun I've ever seen. Bubble-blowers look more like rayguns - but, hey, there's no proof that it IS supposed to be any kind of a raygun (Unless you count the lightning bolt symbol on the side). Raygun raygun raygun. It's an orb mounted atop a grip, after all - with a nipple pointed up and outward, somewhere between the "top" and the "front". Huh.

I see no point at all for any of today's conversation between Scratch and Shecky. This long explanation is necessary for Scratch to hear why, exactly? Did we simply not get to the point, yet? Or maybe SK tired of all the "There's no punchline in my soup!" comments, so he put one in and now is going to tear his hair out over the "Why is there a punchline in my soup?" remarks. I guess it's enlightening or something to know what Scratch thinks of magic, but... what a terrible world of magic SK has suddenly come up with and explained. I don't care that it's not original in the least bit, but I do care that it's a terrible fit; it clearly doesn't explain any of the magic we've ever seen in PVP. Max would have dispelled Skull long ago - or was Scratch the only "person" currently believing in that giant, and that's why he ceased to exist? And I highly doubt that there would be Medusas hanging around, still - do they do charity work for children, too? Haha, I know I'm in way over my head if I'm expecting a logical setup for the magical side of PVP. We're already in one impossible situation with Scratch, after all - either he can only speak English or can only be understood magically (Thanks to, uh, the powers of technology), but he is BOTH - although only one at a time. Depending on what's going on.

The "pfoot" cloud is nice. Scratch's forearms keep ballooning into ever-more-swollen proportions, however. What's the deal? Is he allergic to giants?

"Scratch's forearms keep ballooning into ever-more-swollen proportions, however."

Yeah, somewhat regular in frame 6 but he's going all Popeye in frames 4 and 8.

I always assumed that was some sort of fancy modified hair-dryer that Scratch was using as a gun.

And yes as a Brit the 'Holiday Plans' makes perfect sense to me over here and never noticed or thought it was in any way wrong.

A Holiday is any time of work at all, whereas a vacation usually means a trip abroad.
