Check and Mate

H-uh. I didn't expect a follow up to yesterdays strip.

Maybe it's the close up compared to yesterday but the art feels much more streamlined here. I can't tell if it's better or worse for it though. All the chess pieces look white though.

I don't quite get the extended index finger thing. Is Brent tipping over the panda's piece, or moving one of his own? Yes, it's a small detail but still something worth mentioning.

THE PANDA HIT HIM. HA. HA.

It looks like he's putting down his piece and only then realising that he has won rather than suddenly realising that there is a winning move open to him. Clearly not a particularly strategic chess player.

I think it's slightly funnier if you cut out the first panel, though it's a subjective call.

Next time, let the panda win.

R.W. McGee.

That's right. You understand the joke. Put a gold star on the board next to your name.

Kurtz,

It's sarcasm. He's saying that the joke isn't funny.

Congrats, Kurtz, you didn't understand the joke. Take a gold star from next to your name.

Fuckin' idiot prick.

you should stop using all your good witticisms on this board Kurtz. Gold star next to my name, haha! That's A material for PvPonline.com!

@ RW McGee
It was like that time cole was changing the light bulb and the CEILING FELL ON HIS HEAD! I think I JUST stopped laughing from that joke. Forget Jack Benny, Bob Hope, Richard Pryor, Chris Rock, etc. THAT is the epitome of comedy.

Ha, PVP has been good recently but that was a relatively straight forward and mundane punchline. Sorry Kurtz that we didn't laugh at the joke for the 100th time we saw the Panda attacking Brent. Hitting him with a chessboard didn't make it any funnier.

Only the Three Stooges could have gotten away with repeated physical comedy and YOU sir are no Three Stooges, not even Shemp in that department :).

There's nothing wrong with slapstick.

I chuckled.

I agree with aaaantoine there's nothing wrong with slapstick. I kind of enjoyed it.

BUT I'm disappointed with the lack of quality analysis happening here. The art gets talked about a bit but otherwise it was "the joke wasn't funny!" Obviously some people find it funny.

But as for over analyzing a comic why is there no bigger discussion on what audience he's catering to? Who all reads PvP and what different styles of humour will they enjoy? Is this why he switches between wit-sarcasm-puns-slapstick etc... Or is it simply because he gets bored with one style and moves on to the next? What style is he better at and why?

What makes for a funny slapstick strip?

And finally in what context is he doing this? (This is where news posts related to the strip help) Maybe if the joke had slightly more depth it would have been funnier.

Oh and Kurtz don't be a prick here. Think about your response before you put it down - if you're trying to be funny stop and think about how the people here will react to the wording of the joke. If you're trying to be a jerk mayhaps ponder what purpose it will serve and if it will forward your business of PvP or not.
