Man I'm a Comic Book Nerd

The Secret Origin of LOLbat

Art - I liked the drawing of the "Rock of Eternity" for LOLbat's origins and the memes that his power comes from are drawn well too. I also, liked the shading on this representation of "Shazam" the wizard. The only thing weird thing is that Willy Watson reminds me a lot of Kevin.

Story - A nice solid little homage to the Captain Marvel mythos and relating LOLbat to that. Tying his origin to that of other memes in history is also a clever way to tie the history of the internet to that of popular culture.

Art - missed some portrait frame shading/detail around the boy's hair and mouth.

I need someone to explain today's strip. I guess I'm out of the loop since I don't have an XBox.

To buy downloadable content for XBox (and also Wii and maybe PS3) you don't just pay for what you're buying but rather pay for points and then trade in those points for various downloads. Unfortunately, the quantities of points you can buy at one time rarely correspond with the amount of points you need for your download. So you're always left with some left over, and usually end up having to buy more points if you don't want to feel like those last few dollars have gone to waste.

In the comic Francis finally got rid of all his points, but doing so unlocked an achievement which unlocked access to a purchasable download costing 250 points, when the minimum point purchase is 500.

Yeah, I hate Live points. At least the Wii points are 100 to a dollar. To figure out how much an item on live marketplace costs, I have to use some non-standard base system.

Woah, PVP and XKCD are drawing from similar source material today!

Huh. Well I guess that's a humorous premise if you're a "gamer". I'm guessing something similar must have happened to Kurtz recently.

I dunno, I think you can transfer this premise to other things, not just gaming.

I didn't exactly get the whole situation that Francis was going through since I know nothing about Xbox points - but I got the joke, it still works.

I relate (maybe not correctly) in this way: when you get a Dunkin' donuts gift card with five bucks on it, and then your purchase comes to $4.13 - you still have to go back and use up that last 87 cents. But now you have to use your own cash to make up the difference for a $2 cup of coffee. usually the 87 cents sits there, unused, on your dresser...

@Jim Thorpe
Did you get my email with the question I wanted to ask you?

@Jim : I think it works better in your situation than in the strip though. For a start, with Francis being a gamer, there'll always be something else down the line on Live for him and on top of that, he never really struck me as an OCD type of character anyway.
