Open Thread: Insolent Fool

My only comment on Insolent Fool is that the second panel is robbed of any tension we should be feeling thanks to the silhouette technique. We can't see enough of Brent to feel the danger he should be in.

That's your only comment? You're going soft FSM

How about "dissrepect"?

How about they do this to keep magic in our lives? So far it seemed as if Skull was there to help Brent grow up, or maybe grow a heart. If anything, Brent is showing that there will be less whimsy and more serious business in his life now.

Also, the shading and hat on the statue in panel 2 look very awkward and Skull's index finger looks very thing and flat in panel 4.

How about the fact that far from advancing the storyline, we are now right back to the first row of panels on 'The Greater Good'

Oh, and what exactly do they do? Assign us trolls? This smells of retcon.

The progression of the storyline from "The Greater Good" to today is only one comic, and the sequence of events seems natural. Maybe the real problem is that, because of the update schedule, it took us 4 days to get from there to here so it feels like it was more drawn out?

I don't think this is Kurtz's fault, but it is something he has to be careful about. I've noticed he has a tendency to rush through storylines when people start complaining about the pacing.

He's leaning on that silhouette thing a bit much, no?

I think that's a bit weak FSM. While I think the concept of this story line has been a good idea(skull going), I dont think it's ever gone into an area that has made it not predicable or interesting. This strip in particular just seems like a story I have read before.

I also dont think there is any basis a few strips back for brent to call Skull his best friend. I dont think that has any basis in credibility at all. If anything, Cole would be his best friend, Skull would be a long time friend.

I think RFSM has got it right here, you're going soft.

"Just don't hurt, Brent."

Why is Brent hurting? How can Skull tell him to stop hurting? Delicious typo.

because 'everybody hurrrts, sometiiiimes.'

Hm... I suppose if I were his publisher I might note that it's been a week since there's been a joke in what is, ostensibly, a gag-based comic.

That'd be playing Devil's Advocate, though. I'm with FakeSM. I only have nitpicks regarding the recent strips. I'm interested to see where this is going, and I'm glad to see Kurtz having some fun with his art and really putting emotion into it.

Now you guys are just picking nits to have something to do.

Seriously.

Go create something.

"Now you guys are just picking nits to have something to do."

This is all your fault, you know. Maybe if you stopped doing such a good job, we'd actually have something valid to complain about. :p

Okay, I go create something. In turn, you need to spend ten seconds on each strip using Word or a similar application proofread your strip, you obese, unoriginal buffoon.

Yes, I'm aware of my previous typos. However, this is not a product I create to gain revenue or for the enjoyment of others.

Five bucks says Scott is going to do a silhouette in the next strip. He seems to do one in every strip these days and 95% of the time, they're not needed.

Wow, we've now entered the classic "you haven't done it so why should you be able to criticize it" phase of cranky Scott.

Frequently it is seen with athletes who say "well you haven't played the sport so don't comment on it" the problem is people have actual people who are intellegent that can look at something and comment on it. Do food critics have to be good cooks to do their job? Scott have you ever written a movie, produced a TV show, or trained to be an athlete? if not, that doesnt, (and it hasn't) kept you from commenting on other people works.

Here's the problem, most of the people here are good at what they do, and we have in the most part NOT ripped you just to rip you, yet the sensitive nature of the artist still has you making comments like that.

While i havent "created" an artistic work I have studied, earned what I do now for a living and work enough to be able to make comments on a something I enjoy (not as much due to seeing how the artist acts when you talk about his work) IF you are kidding then thats fine but if you're serious I remind you of what you and many other people have said "its just a webcomic" and FUCK you for pretending that we cant talk about things about something we enjoy because we studied the science and math instead of drawing in art class.

And here come the defenses of, "But I'm a SERIOUS web critic! It's my job to anonymously bitch about a comic strip! I shouldn't be accountable for my opinion at all."

You're all so smart. Every plot is "predictable." (Sure, Brent could have come out of the closet for his wedding, but spontaneity doesn't always = good.) Every character is
"poorly drawn." Every strip is "poorly written."

And you have the guts to make the same art nouveau "critiques" every week with your own typos. Maybe that's why almost all of you are afraid to put your own name on such hard-hitting analyses.

Kurtz is right. If you can't even come up with real or new criticisms in your own name, then you need to prove why your opinion matters at all. Let's see 30 anonymous strips posted every day at the same time, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.

They'd better be funny -- no cheating and using movie references more than twice a week. And the art had better be amazing. I want to see the full range of human emotion in a 3 x 3 cell. I want hands -- no mittens. I want eyes -- no glasses.

FSM, I'm really looking at you. You know, so you don't look like a "fucktard."

If you're wondering who the fuck I think I am for making such demands on you, then you now know how retarded you sound.

Who posted something and then deleted it? My google reader didn't pick it up. Now I'm curious to know what was said.

R.W.McGee said...

Is Brent stroking his chin while he yells bastard? That's an interesting choice. Generally that's something people do when they are deep in thought or something. I actually think it would be uncomfortable to hold your chin like that while yelling a swear word.

Also, Scott, I wish to reassure you that I have time every day to create something(I write), do my job, go outside and ride my bike (weather permitting) and come here to check in on PvP. There are plenty of hours in a day if you Tivo the good television for weekends.

Cheers!

I would guess he's rubbing his neck, since he got choked in the previous comic.

Plus, if people come up with the same critiques (besides the Scott is fat comment that always plays here) then that means the same problems exist.

Its like complaining the VGCats is continually late. Do we just say it once and then let it go, or do we keep saying it because, you know, he STILL doesn't update on time.

Brett Schiller (Sage) said...

I deleted to fix a typo and changed a word, you can't edit once posted so I copied, pasted and changed.

Chorius said...

I think the difference in timing complaints is because comics like Megatokyo and VGCats update infrequently, and have stated that up front. Scott has committed himself to a schedule, be it the current 5-day a week, or the previous "7"-day a week. He's also expressed his desire to be published in newspapers (not sure if that's as big a deal to him anymore). If you say you're going to do it, then do it. Otherwise just do what Fred has done, say that you're going to be posting infrequently, then we don't really have a leg to stand on as far as complaining about late comics...

Chorius said...

Doh, just rememebered that VGCats is supposed to update once a week...

Of course, when a weekly strip is a day or two late, does that compare to a daily strip being the same?

I wasnt complaining about VGCats in particular, I was thinking of a complaint in the webcomics that is conistent. VGcats is always late, CAD is usually over-wordy, etc. My point was the Rick Snee point about people having the same complaint on this forum.

If people still see art problems or story problems, or timing problems and they se its consistently there, why can't they still complain about it.

One of my biggest complaints is when people say something along the lines of "we you haven't done this so you can't/shouldn't complain/critic it." You hear it mostly from athletes that don't like to be criticized, but there are many people that I would trust just as much someone who actually performs the task (Harry Calas, Bob Ryan, Mitch Album, Tony Kornheiser are not examples of the "athletic form" but I'd trsut them to comment on it. How many of us have prodcued a TV show or directed a movie, by the logic stated above, we can't offer our opinion because "we haven't gone out and created something"

Am I saying Scott should hang on our every word and change according to our whim? NO! He's got his own vision and should do his own thing. However, that doesn't mean we can't offer our opinion on whatever he like (i visit PVP every goddamn day) and what we don't (schedule (fixed), art, story).

Otherwise we couldn't say The Hottie and The Nottie sucked because we haven't gone and "create[d] something"

"However, this is not a product I create to gain revenue or for the enjoyment of others."

How about "pride in your work," Scott? I also write and draw a comic sheerly for my own personal enjoyment, which I post when I feel like it (and I've never made any illusions or promises about posting schedule, so that's fine). However, when I see a typo, I go back and fix it. Now there are only a handful of people who read MY comic, and I fix it for my personal pride, because I don't want to come off as less educated that I am. Do you not have pride in your work, or are you just being stubborn?

I remember this fun little web comic I used to read. The art wasn't good but it was quirky and had fun, crazy, and simple storylines.
I went to that url recently. It seems some one has hijacked the site. Now the comics are pretentious piles of crap with none of the charm that made the comic endearing.

Clearly Scott's head has gotten too big.

Dude it's a web comic you aren't an artist. See ya dude. At least I'll have the 98 to 02 archives to remember a good thing.
